Know Where to Go...?
A key element of ELFI's work is to promote early intervention for individuals faced with debt related problems, and to work with local advice providers to tackle the triggers and causes of financial exclusion.
People seeking advice on a wide range of issues such as debt, housing, consumer problems and other legal matters may have difficulty accessing the advice they need. This may be due to the hours they work, caring responsibilities, mobility difficulties or possibly their local advice provider does not have the capacity to see new clients at the time help is needed. Often people are not aware that legal advice can help them resolve their problems, where to go or what to do.
Poster and Leaflet Campaign
Our 'Know Where to Go' poster and leaflet campaign aims to publicise easily accessible range of national sources of information and advice which complement local face-to-face services in local advice agencies, CABx and Law Centres. People can get extensive help through websites and telephone advice to find out their rights and how to deal with problems such as rent arrears, welfare benefits entitlements, being in debt, relationship breakdown and much more.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of advice, better equip people to deal with their problems and get them engaged in the network of options available to them earlier and before the problem escalates to crisis point such as Court action. We hope, over time, that this will reduce pressure on local advice services by reducing the number of emergency appointments needed and helping to ensure people are better prepared when casework is necessary. The campaign also promotes self-help options for those who can largely resolve problems when equipped with the right information and useful resources.

'Know where to go' is being launched in March 2006, and will initially distribute 200 posters and 20,000 leaflets across East London. We will be distributing them through our network of 'early notifier' and community-based organisations like Sure Start Children's Centres, social landlords, Credit Unions, Libraries and community groups. The materials have been developed using extensive input and consultation from a range of 'early notifier' organisations, their clients and the Partnership to ensure they are clear and easily understood.
